Diana Belbita Post-Fight Interview | UFC 289

After running level for much of the first round, Belbita started taking over late in the frame, her pace and output chipping away at Oliveira’s gas tank. As the fight progressed, the Stoney Creek-based fighter continued her assault, getting the better of the exchanges, whether in space, against the fence, or on the ground.

Oliveira had moments, including a beautiful jumping knee that landed flush in the third, with the women battling to the final horn. When the scores were tallied, it was Belbita that came out ahead, securing her second UFC victory and pushing her record to 15-7 overall. | Official Scorecards

Steve Erceg defeats David Dvorak by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)

Flyweights David Dvorak and Steve Erceg spent 15 minutes getting after one another in their flyweight preliminary bout, with the Australian newcomer emerging victorious.

Dvorak did well to counter, finding his range as he welcomed Erceg forward, but the Australian newcomer was quick to show he belonged. Midway through the second round, the debutant caught Dvorak with a right, wobbled him with a head kick behind it, and attacked a guillotine, only for “The Undertaker” to escape and finish the round landing a couple clean shots of his own.

Steve Erceg Post-Fight Interview | UFC 289
/

As in the opening fight of the evening, the duo battled tit-for-tat for much of the third, a constant back-and-forth until the final horn sounded, neither man really distancing himself from the other. The judges were again called upon to render a verdict, and it was Erceg that came out ahead, getting the nod on all three cards to toppled a ranked fighter in his short-notice debut.

Outstanding effort all around for “Astro Boy” in Vancouver. | Official Scorecards

Kyle Nelson Post-Fight Interview | UFC 289
/

There was a clear size and power advantage for “The Monster,” who did well moving Bilder around in the clinch and landing with heavier, more effective shots throughout. While Wilder tried to use his speed and movement to his advantage, he simply couldn’t match the impact of Nelson’s shots for much of the contest.

All three judges scored the fight for the Canadian, who picked up his first victory since defeating “Polo” Reyes in September 2019, moving to 14-5-1 in the process. | Official Scorecards

Aiemann Zahabi def. Aoriqileng by KO (left hook) at 1:04 of Round 1

Oh Canada!

Aiemann Zahabi pushed his winning streak to three with a first-round knockout win over Aoriqileng that sent the partisan crowd at Rogers Arena into hysterics. The 35-year-old from Montreal, who hadn’t fought since defeating Ricky Turcios last summer, ate a couple leg kicks early, but found a home for a left hook that sent Aoriqileng crashing to the canvas and Zahabi into celebration mode.

That’s three straight wins for the Montreal native, who is now 4-2 in the UFC and 10-2 overall. With the loss, Aoriqileng falls to 2-3 inside the Octagon and 24-10 for his career. | Official Scorecards

Jasmine Jasudavicius def. Miranda Maverick by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Miranda Maverick and Jasmine Jasudavicius got after it in their flyweight encounter, with the Canadian’s constant pressure and unrelenting aggressiveness proving too much for her ranked opponent.

Maverick did well in the opening round, landing the better strikes of the two and threatening with an armbar from bottom for the back half of the round, but from there, Jasudavicius was in charge. She counter-wrestled exceptionally well, spending a good amount of time in dominant positions on the mat in the second, and punishing the fading Maverick late in the third.

Jasmine Jasudavicius Post-Fight Interview | UFC 289

All three judges saw the fight for Jasudavicius, who picked up her second straight win, third victory in four UFC appearances, and could very well find herself with a number next to her name when the rankings update next week. Official Scorecards

Nassourdine Imavov and Chris Curtis fight to a no contest (accidental clash of heads) at 3:04 of Round 2

What was shaping up to be an entertaining back-and-forth between Nassourdine Imavov and Chris Curtis was waved off as a result of a cut caused by an accidental clash of heads.

Imavov used his length and wrestling to get the better of things in the first, and the action looked primed to pick up as the two continued to get after one another into the second. Nearly two minutes in, Imavov looked to close the distance with Curtis along the fence, their heads colliding with an audible thunk.

After consulting with the doctor and giving Curtis time, the bout was halted and declared a no contest. It’s the second straight fight where Curtis has been impacted by a clash of heads, and an unsatisfying way to wrap up the prelims. | Official Scorecards

Marc-Andre Barriault defeats Eryk Anders by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

The pay-per-view main card kicked off with a battle between middleweight bruisers Marc-Andre Barriault and Eryk Anders, who came out of the gates quickly and never really let off the gas.

Barriault dropped and stunned Anders early in the first, with the former Alabama linebacker doing well to gather himself and work back into the fight by pressuring the French-Canadian and fighting from the clinch. The two ran level throughout the second, a pair of accidental low blows from Barriault having the most telling impact, before following suit in the third, minus the fouls.

Marc-Andre Barriault Post-Fight Interview | UFC 289
/

The judges were called upon to determine a winner and they were unanimous in how they saw it, awarding Barriault a clean sweep of the scorecards. That’s now back-to-back wins for “Powerbar” and a fourth consecutive victory for the Canadians on the card, leaving only Mike Malott left to complete the sweep. | Official Scorecards

Dan Ige defeats Nate Landwehr by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)

After entering the year on a three-fight slide, Dan Ige is now on a two-fight winning streak after putting away a game and durable Nate Landwehr in Vancouver.

In both the first and the second rounds, the two men stood in front of one another and traded, with Ige mixing his attacks and levels a little more and landing at a slightly better clip before stinging Landwehr late in the each frame. He nearly put him away at the end of the second, leaving “Nate the Train” on shaky footing heading to his corner, before the two men went toe-to-toe for the final five minutes.

Dan Ige Post-Fight Interview | UFC 289

Landwehr doesn’t lose any ground with this setback, showing he’s tougher than shoe leather in the process, while Ige reminds everyone why he’s a Top 15 staple and miserable matchup for anyone looking to break into the rankings in the featherweight division. | Official Scorecards

Mike Malott defeats Adam Fugitt by submission (guillotine choke) at 1:06 of Round 2

Mike Malott may not have finished in the first round, but he did earn a victory to seal a Canadian sweep at UFC 289 on Saturday night.

The Burlington, Ontario native locked up a guillotine choke seconds into the second round, diving on the submission after flooring Adam Fugitt with a clubbing right hand, left hook combination as the dazed welterweight looked to wrestle. It was the capper to a massive week for the emerging Canadian and a perfect night inside the Octagon for athletes from the host nation.

Mike Malott Post-Fight Interview | UFC 289

Malott is now 3-0 with three straight finishes since graduating to the UFC from Dana White’s Contender Series. The 31-year-old is having himself a breakout start to his UFC run, and should find himself in another showcase opportunity next time out. | Official Scorecards

Co-Main Event: Charles Oliveira defeats Beneil Dariush by TKO (strikes) at 4:10 of Round 1

Charles Oliveira put himself right back in the championship mix with a first-round stoppage win over Beneil Dariush in the UFC 289 co-main event.

Dariush controlled a good portion of the frame on the ground, but when Oliveira worked his way back up late in the round, he went on the offensive, hurting Dariush and sending him to the ground. From there, the former champion pounded out a finish, halting Dariush’s winning streak and showing he’s still every bit as dangerous as he’s been saying all week.

Charles Oliveira Post-Fight Interview | UFC 289

This is a statement win for “Do Bronx,” who adds to his record number of stoppage wins inside the Octagon. He needed to make a statement in his return to the Octagon and a massive statement was made. | Official Scorecards

Main Event: Amanda Nunes defeats Irene Aldana by unanimous decision (50-44, 50-44, 50-43)

Amanda Nunes is still the queen of the bantamweight jungle, successfully defending her title against Irene Aldana to close out UFC 289 in Vancouver.

“The Lioness” was never bothered, peppering the challenger with jabs and kicks to the midsection while mixing in heavy combinations and demoralizing takedowns whenever she felt like changing the location of the action. She battered Aldana in every phase, cracking her with heavy shots in the championship round that served to show the gulf that separates not only these two, but Nunes from everyone else in the division.
