UFC 276: Adesanya vs Cannonier Results

Adesanya got more aggressive in the second round, with Cannonier taking the blows well, but not offering up enough offense to deter the champion, who did receive a stern warning from referee Herb Dean for an inadvertent eye poke that brought a momentary halt to the action.
 
In the third, it was more of the same until Cannonier finally got close to Adesanya and was able to do some good work in the clinch, but in round four, Adesanya resumed his control of the bout, as he did enough offensively to stay ahead while keeping the challenger from doing the same.
 
With five minutes to turn everything around, Cannonier came out fast for the fifth round, but Adesanya nullified the attacks with strikes of his own that put the challenger into the role of ineffective aggressor. With a minute left, Cannonier found some daylight with a couple hard punches upstairs, but Adesanya took them well, paused, and fired back down the stretch making sure the title remained in his possession. | Official Scorecards

Two minutes into the second round, Volkanovski locked up with Holloway, but the Hawaiian’s takedown defense was rock solid. Upon breaking, Volkanovski landed another flush right hand, this one opening a nasty cut around the left eye of the challenger. Holloway didn’t stop pressing, but he wasn’t able to tag Volkanovski consistently, and after two rounds likely going the Aussie’s way, he had work to do over the next three frames.
 
The blood started flowing again in round three, Volkanovski’s accuracy on point as he threw a variety of strikes at his foe. With under two minutes left, the pair clinched, Volkanovski in control until the broke after a short spell. Once at range, Volkanovski continued to score, and while Holloway got in a few shots late, they weren’t enough to take the round.
 
Holloway had some positive moments in round four, but just when he seemed to be getting some momentum, Volkanovski would crash the party with more of his fast and accurate strikes, and there was more of the same in the fifth for “Alexander the Great,” who made another statement on the sport’s biggest stage. | Official Scorecards

After a tactical opening from both fighters, Pereira struck with speed and finality, as a left hook staggered Strickland and put him on a knee, and as the Californian rose, a right hand sent him down and out. The official time of referee Jason Herzog’s stoppage was 2:36 of round one.

Lawler looked sharp early with punches to the body and head, but when he started to pull ahead, Barberena fired back and then a fight broke out, each taking turns teeing off on the other. Just past the midway point, Lawler landed a hard uppercut, but then Barberena responded with his volume striking, keeping the former champ off-balance until he found his rhythm again.
 
The pace didn’t let up in the second, but Lawler used a stiff right jab to bloody Barberena and start taking control of the bout. That didn’t stop Barberena from throwing, and with under two minutes left, he had Lawler hurt and on the defensive, and the momentum had switched dramatically. What followed was a barrage of strikes from Barberena, and after a series of unanswered blows, referee Mark Smith halted the bout at 4:47 of round two.

Munhoz went after O’Malley’s legs with his kicks throughout the first round, but the Arizonan defended many of them and didn’t change his forward motion, which was filled with many feints and sporadic offensive attacks. Munhoz’ busier attack served him well in the opening frame, though.
 
O’Malley got busier in round two, but any momentum he was building was nullified by an inadvertent eye poke that brought a halt to the action and a visit from the Octagonside physician, who recommended that referee Jason Herzog halt the fight, which he did at 3:09 of the second stanza.

Turner nailed Riddell with a flush right hand early, and as the New Zealander tried to recover, “The Tarantula” locked in a guillotine choke. Moments later, Riddell tapped out. The official time was :45 of the opening round.

As for the 38-year-old Miller, he not only set the record for most wins in the Octagon, he evened the score with Cerrone, who defeated him in 2014, with his victory, which lifted his record to 35-16, 1 NC.
 
The veterans mainly traded kicks in the first half of the opening round, Cerrone holding the edge, especially when he threw punches into the mix. With a little over two minutes to go, Miller caught a kick and took Cerrone to the mat, where he got in some hard strikes from the top position. Miller looked for a triangle choke, but Cerrone was able to dodge it and get into his foe’s guard. Miller stayed busy, though, before the two traded late submission attempts.

Green was the aggressor from the start, but when the Californian began getting some shots in, Garry responded with accurate strikes that marked up the face of “Gifted Gabe” and earned the Irishman his respect.
 
The two battled in the clinch in round two, trading the control position until a Garry takedown just before the midpoint of the frame. Green got to his feet and briefly put his foe on the mat but soon the two were separated and the fast and accurate Garry scored effectively before Green fired back, nailing the Irishman with a hard left just before the horn.
 
A right hand by Garry dropped Green in the opening seconds of the third round, but Green recovered, got back to his feet and went into the clinch. The two battled there briefly before separating, and Garry fought well from the outside, his strikes keeping Green largely at bay for the rest of the fight. | Official Scorecards

Tavares caught Du Plessis with a short right hand in the opening minute, prompting the South African to look for a takedown. But when the fight went to the mat, it was Tavares landing on top. Du Plessis got to his feet and continued to seek the takedown, but Tavares defended well before getting loose with under two minutes left. Another right hand followed, jarring Du Plessis, who went directly into the clinch.
 
Du Plessis began finding his range with his strikes in the second round, bloodying Tavares’s face in the process, and he ended the round by staggering the Hawaiian, who continued to stand his ground and throw back.
 
The 185-pounders didn’t back down from each other in a grueling third round that saw each land big shots, with Du Plessis holding the edge but the tough as nails Tavares giving his foe all that he could handle. But down the stretch, Du Plessis pulled away to get the victory. | Official Scorecards

After being on the feet in the early stages of the bout, Muniz got his takedown just before the midway point, and he went to work. With a minute left, Muniz got into the mount, and while Hall escaped and got to his feet, Muniz dragged him back to the mat and kept him there for the rest of the frame.
 
Hall eluded Muniz’ first takedown attempt of round two, but the second one put the New Yorker on his back. Midway through, Muniz was in the mount again, and then took the back, but just when it looked like the Brazilian was going to end the fight, Hall got loose and ended the round with some hard ground strikes.

Scores were 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27 for the No. 13-ranked Barber, now 11-2. The No.10-ranked Eye, who retired in the Octagon after the fight, leaves the sport with a 15-11, 1 NC record.
 
The pair locked up almost immediately, Eye initially holding the edge in positioning, but when it came to damage being done, it was all Barber, who specifically used her elbows to raise a mouse over her opponent’s right eye in the opening round.

The fight went right back to the clinch against the fence as the second stanza began, and though they separated briefly, another clinch ensued, drawing boos from the crowd. Just before the midway point, the two broke, and Barber landed a head kick before Eye got the takedown she was looking for. And while there wasn’t any significant action, Eye did keep Barber grounded until the horn.
 
Barber was able to stay out of the clinch for the first minute and a half of the final round, striking effectively, but then Eye was able to have some success in getting back to close range. A quick flurry of strikes by Clark dropped Stoliarenko to the mat briefly in the opening moments of the fight, but seconds after rising, the Lithuanian scored a takedown and went right into her trademark armbar that produced a tap 42 seconds into the fight.
