Chris Weidman took to Instagram on Thursday to throw a public swing at Vitor Belfort, the No. 1 contender to his UFC middleweight title, with the above side-by-side picture and comment.
The much-anticipated clash at 185 pounds is still four months away, but Weidman and Belfort have already started sparring outside the Octagon.
Belfort was interviewed backstage at Fight Night: Lawler vs. Brown on July 26, and said he wasn't impressed with Weidman because he has faced numerous top fighters in the sport.
"I always knew that Weidman has the game of MMA, is the new breed. But I've fought the best guys so nothing impresses me," Belfort told Fox reporter Ariel Helwani. "When you step in the cage it's the same jungle, just different animals. ... I think that fight is what I want."
Weidman came roaring back on social media yesterday, questioning Belfort's physique with a witty side-by-side photo.
"Hang on for a second is this what happens when you replace TRT with TNT?" Weidman asked on Instagram.
But Belfort isn't concerned about what people think of him. He said that lions don't apologize for being lions.
"I'm very confident in who I am and what I've accomplished," he said. "I have [my family] behind me. ... I am who I am. I don't apologize, because lions don't apologize for being lions."
Belfort and Weidman are set to meet on Dec. 6 at UFC 181 in Las Vegas. A venue has not yet been announced.
