Live Results, Winner Interviews And More From UFC Fight Night: Makhachev vs Moises, Live From The UFC APEX In Las Vegas

UFC continues its run of events at UFC APEX with a pivotal bout in the stacked lightweight division as No. 9 ranked contender Islam Makhachev intends to prove that he is worthy of title contention when he takes on fellow rising star No. 14 Thiago Moises. In the co-main event, women’s bantamweight veteran and No. 12 ranked Marion Reneau looks to spoil the return of former UFC champion Miesha Tate.

UFC FIGHT NIGHT: MAKHACHEV vs MOISES will take place Saturday, July 17 from UFC APEX in Las Vegas. All bouts will be available on ESPN, ESPN+ and ESPN Deportes beginning with the prelims at 7 p.m. ET/ 4 p.m. PT and followed by the main card at 10 p.m. ET/ 7 p.m. PT.

Khabib Nurmagomedov protégé Makhachev (19-1, fighting out of Makhachkala, Russia) aims to leave no doubt that he is destined to challenge for the UFC lightweight championship in the near future. Among the most dominant forces in MMA today, Makhachev holds the record for the least strikes absorbed per minute in UFC history, a distinction he earned with intimidating performances over Drew Dober, Davi Ramos and Gleison Tibau. He now intends to extend his impressive win streak and become the first fighter to finish Moises.

Moises (15-4, fighting out of Indaiatuba, Brazil) has his sights set on keeping his current momentum going and securing the biggest win of his young career. A signee from Dana White’s Contender Series, the 26-year-old Moises recently found his footing in the talent-rich lightweight division when he rattled off three straight exciting victories against Michael Johnson, Bobby Green and Alexander Hernandez. Moises now plans to shock the world by upsetting Makhachev and beginning his own run towards UFC gold.

Reneau (9-7-1, fighting out of Visalia, Calif.) looks to deliver another stellar performance and show why she is one of the elite in women’s MMA. Reneau showed off her Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt skills in her debut with a Performance of the Night submission win over former UFC champion Jessica Andrade and then followed up this performance with equally notable finishes over Milana Dudieva, Talita Bernardo and Sara McMann. She now seeks to make another statement against Tate.

Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Tate (18-7, fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev.) steps back into the Octagon for the first time in almost five years, looking to remind everyone of the skills that earned her UFC gold. Among the most popular athletes in MMA, Tate secured her first shot at the belt with victories over former title challengers Liz Carmouche, Sara McMann and Jessica Eye before defeating Holly Holm for the title. She now intends to get right back in the mix by becoming the first person to finish Reneau.

Alan Baudot vs Rodrigo Nascimento Ferreira

In the heavyweight opener, Rodrigo Nascimento shook off a slow start to halt Alan Baudot in the second round.

Baudot was busy and effective with his strikes as the fight began, and while things went south when Nascimento got him in a clinch, as the action went to the mat, Baudot landed on top and landed some hard punches to regain control. Once standing, Nascimento locked up with him again, but it was Baudot doing all the scoring, and when they separated, the Frenchman landed more jarring blows.

Francisco Figueiredo vs Malcolm Gordon

The third time was the charm for Canada’s Malcolm Gordon, who earned his first UFC victory by defeating Francisco Figueiredo via unanimous decision in a flyweight bout.

Gordon (13-5) tore out of his corner to begin the fight, but as the two tumbled to the canvas in the second minute, it was Figueiredo (12-4-1, 1NC) on top and in control for much of the round until Gordon got loose, and in the final minute, it was the Canadian scoring with ground strikes from the top position

The second round was a close one as well, but a late takedown may have cinched it for Gordon, who continued to keep the pace high. And though Figueiredo tried to turn things around in the closing stages of round three, this night belonged to Gordon, who took the decision via scores of 30-27, 29-28, 29-28.

In bantamweight action, Sergey Morozov won a three-round unanimous decision over Khalid Taha.

Scores were 30-27 across the board, for Morozov, now 17-4. Taha falls to 13-4, 1 NC.

Two minutes in, Morozov put the fight on the mat, just where he wanted it, and he remained in control but didn’t have Taha in any serious danger until late in the frame when he landed a flush punch to the face as his foe looked to secure a leg lock.

Taha was the aggressor on the feet to start round two, but it was Morozov who landed the harder shots until Taha evened the score in the second minute, prompting a lengthy grappling exchange by the Kazakhstan veteran that led to a late takedown as Morozov took Taha’s back.

The grappling attack of Morozov was the difference again in the third round, and though Taha kept swinging for the fences when at distance, he wasn’t able to land the finisher before the final horn.

Billy Quarantillo Post-Fight Interview | UFC Fight Night: Makhachev vs Moises

It was a frantic start with Quarantillo going on the attack with kicks and a right hand that dropped Benitez in the opening minute. Benitez recovered quickly and looked for an armbar, but Quarantillo slammed his way out of trouble and then took the bloodied Benitez’ back. All the while, the Buffalo native looked for a choke while landing strikes, but with a minute left, Benitez got free and back to his feet, nearly getting a guillotine choke before Quarantillo escaped and ended the frame with some ground strikes.

Quarantillo opened the second round with a takedown and again took Benitez’ back. In the second minute the two rose and exchanged blows until another takedown put Benitez on his back. Quarantillo fired off strikes from the top position and referee Mark Smith was watching closely. Once standing, Quarantillo kept the pressure on, and while a stoppage for a low blow from “Billy Q” and a visit from the Octagonside physician bought Benitez some time, the onslaught continued again until the horn.

Main Event: Islam Makhachev vs Thiago Moises

In his first UFC main event, lightweight contender Islam Makhachev extended his current win streak to eight with a fourth-round submission victory over Thiago Moises at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas.

Makhachev did good work on the feet with his striking at distance and in the clinch in the opening frame, and then he wrapped up the round with a takedown with a minute left and kept Moises there until the horn.

The fight went down to the mat earlier in round two, but it was the same result, with Makhachev reversing some early trouble to take Moises’ back. Moises stayed composed and defended well, but he was rapidly falling behind on the scorecards, and Makhachev surged at the end of the round, getting into the mount and nearly locking in an armbar
