There’s a new contender on the rise in the heavyweight division.

Former light heavyweight Vitor Petrino’s decision to move up from light heavyweight in 2025 has proved to be an inspired one, with the 28-year-old rebounding from a two-fight skid at 205 pounds to a four-fight win streak at heavyweight.

Petrino’s latest win came Saturday night, when, in the co-main event slot, he took full advantage of his elevated billing by outworking Serghei Spivac over three rounds to claim the most impactful victory of his career to date.

Spivac might not be considered a title threat at present, but he has a well-deserved reputation for being a tough test for top-tier heavyweights, as illustrated in his victories over Derrick Lewis, Marcin Tybura, and Ante Delija.

Petrino ensured his name wasn’t added to that list as he outstruck Spivac on the feet, and outwrestled and outgrappled him on the ground to claim a shutout victory on the scorecards, with all three judges giving him all three rounds.

It demonstrated that Petrino may now be in his best weight class and suggested that the best is yet to come from the Brazilian powerhouse.

Reinier de Ridder

The Dutch ace, who had previously been taking himself to hell and back to cut weight to make 185 pounds, finally made the decision to move up to 205, and the difference was clear for all to see.

A fit, healthy, and filled-out de Ridder looked outstanding as he dominated Roman Dolidze en route to a first-round TKO finish in their light heavyweight matchup. But while a win over Dolidze is certainly worthy of note, it’s the context of de Ridder’s performance at his new weight class that carries the most weight (pun intended).

De Ridder had previously held championships in Asia with ONE Championship at 205 and 225 pounds and immediately looked back to his old self as he defeated Dolidze to snap a two-fight skid and put himself within striking distance of the light heavyweight division’s big names.

The tears? Well, they were of relief, of happiness, and of anticipation, with the big Dutchman keen to return to see his family after a long eight-week camp away from home.

When he returns to the Octagon, he’ll do so refreshed and back in his comfort zone. And that may be bad news for the rest of the light heavyweight division.

MarQuel Mederos

You don’t get an easy ride when you face Mason Jones, so when MarQuel Mederos drew the Welshman’s name for his appearance in Sacramento, he knew he had a big chance to make a statement. And in a bonus-winning performance, that’s exactly what he did.

Faced with a tough, durable, relentless striker in Jones, Mederos was forced to problem-solve in real time as he looked to find the right openings for his offense, all while being repeatedly punched in the face.

The first round saw Mederos on the receiving end of most of the round’s most effective offense as Jones pushed the pace in typical style. But by the second round, Mederos had seen enough to know what adjustments to make, and he made them to emphatic effect.

Sharp strikes saw him start to score more effectively early in the round, and a nasty short elbow in the inside put “The Dragon” on wobbly legs. Mederos saw his moment but didn’t rush his work as he made sure he got his feet right before letting his hands go as he eventually battered Jones to a standstill up against the Octagon fence for a huge victory.

Mederos’ finish of Jones was the first time the former two-division Cage Warriors champion had been stopped with strikes, and it suggested that The MMA Lab prospect has both the skills and the fight IQ to make some serious progress in the lightweight division.

Carli Judice

When Carli Judice sat down with UFC.com ahead of her fight earlier this week, she said the key to victory over the unbeaten Jeisla Chaves was to stick to her strengths, to lean on her striking skills and to keep her striking, per her fighting nickname, “Crispy”.

That’s exactly what she did in an outstanding performance that saw her comprehensively outstrike Chaves en route to a first-round TKO victory.

Judice settled into her work quickly as she found her range early with snappy, straight punches. But the finish came courtesy of her kicks, with a crushing body kick that folded up her opponent, leaving her unable to continue.

It was quick, clinical, and emphatic, as Judice added yet another impressive victory to her growing resumé and banked a cool $100,000 Performance of the Night bonus for good measure.

In her conversation with us earlier in the week, she said she wanted to take her time and travel at her own pace as she makes her way up the women’s flyweight division. Based on that performance, it looks like she’s just put her foot on the accelerator.

Dana White’s Contender Series continues to produce remarkable success stories in the UFC, and the latest tale belongs to Anthony Wint, who completed a whirlwind 11-day turnaround to go from Contender Series hopeful to UFC heavyweight danger man in remarkable fashion.

Former New York Jets practice squad linebacker Wint needed just 34 seconds to demolish Matt Adams and earn a contract on Week 1 of the Contender Series last week. That earned him a short-notice call to take on Terrance Chatman in the main card opener on Saturday night. It was a big opportunity for Wint to show his skills to a big-arena crowd, and he didn’t fluff his lines as he claimed a statement win via first-round submission.

Wint brought the energy on his walkout and the intensity during the fight as he calmly and patiently worked for an opening, took Chatman to the canvas, and choked him out cold with an arm-triangle choke.

It was the perfect way for Wint to introduce himself to the UFC, and showed that, while he has undoubted power in his hands, he has the skills to put heavyweights away with his grappling, too. His story is going to be fascinating to watch as he looks to climb the heavyweight ranks in the months and years ahead.
