There is no one way to climb the ladder in the fight game.
Some fighters are boisterous in both their personality and performance, and they can often put themselves on a quick path upward. Others are methodical, quiet, and stack wins until they are undeniable. For the undefeated Rafael Estevam, he is letting his fighting do the talking as he approaches his fourth bout in the Octagon, but his first in the bantamweight division.

Although an unblemished record often warrants a good amount of hype, Estevam’s struggles on the scale (he missed the flyweight limit twice in three attempts) stymied any momentum. At bantamweight, however, he feels healthy, strong and ready to put his best foot forward against Ethyn Ewing at UFC Fight Night: Moicano vs Duncan, but he doesn’t care too much about capturing the eyes and ears of the mixed martial arts fanbase.
“I don’t look for that kind of recognition,” Estevam told UFC.com. “I just want to continue to do my thing, continue to win fights, continue to put on strong performances, to continue to do what I’m good at doing, and I think the recognition and reward will come with that.”
Estevam introduced himself to the UFC brass with a second-round TKO win on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2022 but has only made the walk thrice since earning his contract.
However, not only does he hope to not sweat hitting the limit, he hopes this is the start of a much more active schedule, which would also help him build momentum in the notoriously stacked weight division.

“I’m a complete guy,” Estevam said. “What I bring to the table is someone that obviously is very strong on the ground, but I do have very good striking. If people let me show it to them, they’ll see how surprising it can be, and I will surprise a lot of people with that.”
In terms of dance partners, he couldn’t ask for a better one in Ewing, who broke through in 2025 when he stepped in on short notice to face rising star Malcolm Wellmaker in New York City. Rather than Wellmaker collecting his third knockout win of 2025, it was Ewing earning the decision win in a back-and-forth contest. With a full camp, expectations around Ewing are optimistic, but that also provides an opportunity for Estevam to show his stuff in a real way.
“[Ewing is] a very versatile, tough, strong guy,” Estevam said. “He’s coming with a lot of stuff. I see the resistance, but I’m me, and I’m very ready and very prepared for this fight.”
Considering half of Estevam’s 14 professional wins came without the need for the judges’ scorecards, his three decision wins in the Octagon represent a sort of outlier. Ewing is the kind of guy to stand, trade and scramble, so Estevam could create some opportunities for a signature win on April 4.

From there, the 29-year-old believes he can finally gain some traction. One could argue three wins in the UFC already represent just that, but that speaks to Estevam’s self-belief. In his mind, the adulation will come. It’s only a matter of time.
“I want to tell everyone at 135 that I’m here. I’m a strong fighter, somebody that’s going to leave a mark, and it doesn’t matter if it is at 125 or 135. I’m here doing my thing, getting wins, making history. With all that consistency, we’re going to continue to do what we do best.”
