If you don’t know who Amanda Lemos is, here’s why you should have your eyes glued to the TV when she challenges Zhang Weili for the strawweight title at this weekend’s UFC 292.
The 36-year-old Brazilian contender has put on an absolute show through nine UFC appearances, as she’s finished five of her wins, which ties her with former champions Jessica Andrade and Rose Namajunas for the most in strawweight history. Her three TKO wins are also tied with Andrade for the most in UFC history and Lemos has the most knockdowns in strawweight history.
Basically, what I’m trying to say is that Lemos is one of the hardest hitting and dangerous fighters the strawweight division has ever seen.
Check out these five performances from Lemos, which helped her earn a title shot at UFC 292: Sterling vs O’Malley.
Amanda Lemos vs Miranda Granger
UFC Fight Night: Edgar vs The Korean Zombie – December 21, 2019
Lemos’ strawweight debut was a preview of things to come, as she displayed unreal power and a well-rounded game that is aimed to finish a fight, no matter the situation.
Late in the first round, Miranda Granger grabbed hold of Lemos’ leg and Lemos maneuvered her way to Granger’s back and locked in a rear naked choke. The choke didn’t look like it was quite tucked under Granger’s chin, but it put Granger out in a just a few seconds.
Amanda Lemos vs Livinha Souza
UFC 259: Blachowicz vs Adesanya – March 6, 2021
This is the fight that put Lemos into the strawweight rankings. Lemos overwhelmed Livinha Souza for nearly the whole first round. Souza had her back against the Octagon as Lemos stalked her and dropped her early in the fight. That was just a preview of what would happen at the end of the round when Lemos connected with a lightning quick left-hand that sent Souza to the canvas for good.
Amanda Lemos vs Montserrat Conejo Ruiz
UFC Fight Night: Makhachev vs Moises – July 17, 2021
Lemos followed up her dominant win over Souza with a 35-second stunner over Montserrat Ruiz.
Lemos caught Ruiz with a check hook when Ruiz was pushing forward. As Ruiz stumbled toward the Octagon, Lemos hit Ruiz with a three-punch combo that sent her tumbling to the floor. The referee jumped in to prevent Lemos from landing more damage to Ruiz. The knockout win was the fourth fastest in UFC strawweight history.
Amanda Lemos vs Michelle Waterson-Gomez
UFC Fight Night: Ortega vs Rodriguez – July 16, 2022
Lemos saw a big opportunity in her UFC Fight Night: Ortega vs Rodriguez bout with veteran Michelle Waterson-Gomez and she took it.
In the second round, Lemos jumped a guillotine choke and took Waterson-Gomez to the canvas. She squeezed and then suddenly started to celebrate. Waterson-Gomez had tapped but it was so fast and hidden that the stoppage felt strange, but upon looking at the replay it was clear that the choke was so tight that Waterson-Gomez had tapped on the opposite side of the referee.
Beating Waterson-Gomez signaled that Lemos was ready to face top contenders in the division next.
Amanda Lemos vs Marina Rodriguez
UFC Fight Night: Rodriguez vs Lemos – November 5, 2022
Fight fans were pumped as soon as the main event matchup between Lemos and Marina Rodriguez was announced – and for good reason.
Both Brazilians are known for their striking and their high-paced, aggressive fighting styles. They brought that for the first two rounds of the bout, going back-and-forth with technical strikes. But Lemos came fresh off the stool to start round three with a bang.
Lemos landed an overhand right that appeared to hurt Rodriguez, she pressed the action by following that strike up with a flying knee attempt as Rodriguez retreated to the edge of the Octagon. Lemos then unleashed a combo of nothing put power strikes in a blitz that forced the referee to call an end to the bout.
It was extremely impressive and just showcased yet again that Amanda Lemos has game-changing power that she can unload at any time.
