Don’t Sleep On Khaos Williams

UFC Welterweight Khaos Williams Returns To Action This Weekend With Plans To Show Up And Show Out In The UFC Fight Night: Barboza vs Murphy Co-Main Event

It’s been over a year since fight fans have seen Khaos Williams in the Octagon, and the Michigan native is happy to be back in action at this weekend’s UFC Fight Night: Barboza vs Murphy.

He’s been traveling and training, adding to his game to work on his evolution as he prepares for a run at the welterweight rankings. At 5-2 in the UFC and with his lone UFC losses coming against top tier talent in Randy Brown and Michel Pereira, the 30-year-old feels like he’s gotten his skill set right to where it should be as he approaches the upper echelon at 170 pounds.

“I knew we kind of mirror each other. We are both 6 feet [tall], the length is kind of the same, and, of course, I see that he’s more of a grappler. I like that. It’s kind of a counter to what I like to do,” Williams told UFC.com. “I just seen he’s a tough opponent. I seen some of the people he’s beat, and I’m like, ‘OK, this is good; let’s go ahead and get this body.’ Because, at the end of the day, I’m like, shoot, this is what we’re here for, to fight the best. Give me somebody that’s just going to make the W even better.”

It's well-known that Williams packs a punch, and his knockout power is the great equalizer each time he competes, but Williams doesn’t want people to peg him as just a knockout artist. Don’t get it twisted, he loves to score an amazing knockout, but with the amount of work he puts into his craft, he hates when people lazily lump him into that category.

How To Watch Season 3 of Road To UFC

Williams wants to be thought of as a complete fighter, and if you don’t believe him, he’s beyond confident that you’ll see this Saturday against Harris.

“I’m going to surprise everybody,” Williams said. “I’m not just a one trick pony. I’m not just knocking people out because that’s all I can do. At the end of the day, it’s a God given talent, but that’s not all I’m capable of doing and I’m just ready to showcase that. Don’t sleep on me.”

UFC 247: Khaos Williams Knocks Out Morono
/

Wins over Alex Morono, Abdul Razak Alhassan, Matthew Semelsberger, Miguel Baeza, and Rolando Bedoya put Williams right on the outside of the rankings. That’s why a win over Harris at this juncture is so important, as both fighters are on the rise and only one of them can vault themselves into the Top 15.

Getting into the rankings is more important to Williams than knocking out people outside of the rankings. To make it clear, Williams’ goal is to achieve greatness – by knocking people out – but more importantly by climbing the ladder on the way to becoming a champion.

“I’m trying to make history. I’m chasing greatness. This is not even about the money; I feel like that’s going to come eventually, but you got to keep winning,” Williams said. “My main thing that’s important is the continued pursuit of that growth, that gradual increase moving up the ladder and continuing to win, and one day getting that belt.”

An emphatic win over Harris would be the proper next step and likely land him a big fight his next time out. Williams expects the fight to be exciting and he knows the win will be a good reminder to fight fans that he’s coming for the rankings and it’s just a matter of time.

“I’ve shown people since I’ve been here to never count me out. When I came here, I was the underdog and I said it back then and I’m going to say it now, whether I’m the favorite or the underdog, don’t ever count me out,” Williams said. “When you’re the underdog, people don’t see you coming, but I’m pretty sure the people know I’m here now.”

As far as focusing in on the matchup with Harris, it’s all pretty simple for Williams. He’s fully prepared to go three rounds and win a decision, but Williams doesn’t ever go into any fight thinking that his opponent will make it the distance.

He’s coming to take Harris out.

“If this dude makes a mistake, he’s got to pay,” Williams said. “I’m trying to take his soul out his body, I’m trying to see the body drop.
