The Bigger Picture | UFC 306: O'Malley vs Dvalishvili

Detailing The Deeper Takeaways From Saturday’s Spectacular Event at Sphere

While this series will continue to focus on the action inside the Octagon on pay-per-view nights, there is no way to kick off the Noche UFC edition of The Bigger Picture without mentioning the stunning visuals and production elements that made Saturday’s event at Sphere so special.

Each of the films and all the backgrounds were utterly captivating, even at home, and made the event feel more like an immersive, interactive experience than a fight card, which is why so many online and even the broadcast team of Jon Anik, Daniel Cormier, and Joe Rogan wondered if this would really be a “one and done” situation.

Regardless of what the future holds, this past weekend’s event was captivating, and what transpired inside the Octagon provided us with plenty to talk about, as well.

Merab Dvalishvili Post-Fight Interview | UFC 306
/

Merab Dvalishvili claimed the bantamweight title with a unanimous decision win over “Suga” Sean O’Malley in the UFC 306 main event, garnering scores of 49-46 and 48-47 twice to collect his 11th consecutive victory overall and ascend to the top of the 135-pound weight class.

This fight wasn’t as close as the 48-47 scores suggest, as Dvalishvili did an outstanding job of stifling O’Malley’s offensive output and keeping him out of rhythm by pressuring forward, constantly feinting and moving, and grinding on the champion whenever he got him in his clutches. Once he banked the first two rounds, it felt like O’Malley was suddenly faced with a Herculean task, and while he is an expert marksman, Dvalishvili did well to crowd him and prevent him from firing all that often, let alone finding the target with something that shifted the fight in his favor.

How To Watch Dana White's Contender Series | Season 8

Saturday was the second time in three pay-per-view events that an unheralded challenger has used a relentless pace and intense pressure to unseat a sitting champion, and there are obvious parallels to be drawn between Dvalishvili and welterweight titleholder Belal Muhammad.

They each lost their first appearances inside the Octagon, each had to put together a lengthy winning streak to finally earn a championship opportunity, and each has enjoyed tremendous success while utilizing an offensive approach that is — and I say this with the utmost respect and appreciation for their efforts — pretty basic. It honestly feels like a big part of why both were so frequently counted out as they continued to work forward in their respective divisions, and many have been quick to suggest their individual reigns may not last too long.

But we’ve been saying someone would be able to deal with the non-stop pressure and indefatigable approach of both Muhammad and Dvalishvili for some time, and thus far, it hasn’t happened, so maybe it’s time to stop doubting their ability to get the job done?

Many expected O’Malley to be able to batter Dvalishvili as he came forward and assumed he would dispatch the challenger much in the same way he did Aljamain Sterling, but it wasn’t until the fifth round, when “The Machine” had already effectively wrapped up the win, that he was able to land anything that remotely bothered the streaking new champion.

Dvalishvili, like Muhammad in July, continues to show that you don’t have to be flashy to be effective, and that outstanding fundamentals and a non-stop motor are more than enough to carry you to the top of the mountain in the UFC.

The Ambassador This Sport Needs

Watching Valentina Shevchenko’s effortless transition from English to Spanish to Russian to Thai during her post-fight interview with Joe Rogan on Saturday night was a reminder that the now two-time flyweight champion is the best possible ambassador for the sport of mixed martial arts on the planet today.

Valentina Shevchenko Octagon Interview | UFC 306

The 36-year-old from Kyrgyzstan turned in a masterful performance in her trilogy fight with Alexa Grasso, utilizing perfectly timed level changes to dominate the Mexican champion on the canvas on the way to a clean sweep of the scorecards and the start of a second reign atop the 125-pound weight class. Offensively, she showed the pristine fundamentals that have always been a hallmark of her repertoire, and in the moments when Grasso attacked with submissions, Shevchenko displayed patience and a sharp understanding of how to handle the situation and remain in control.

And then, after having the title wrapped around her waist once more, she spoke effortlessly in four languages, showing grace, humility, and appreciation for Grasso, her coaches and training partners, and the fans.

Her combination of elite skill in all facets of the sport, her stellar resume — she’s now 13-3-1 in the UFC with nine title fight victories — and her globe-trotting approach to her craft make Shevchenko stand apart from any of her contemporaries. Coupled with the fact that she can literally speak to multiple audiences, is an outstanding interview, and also continues to be one of the best fighters on the planet make her a one-of-one in this space and someone that embodies all the best elements of what this sport has to offer.

Shevchenko is the type of fighter every coach should be showing their young charges when it comes to building a diverse skill set and outstanding fundamentals, and someone agents, managers, and marketing personnel should be urging their clients to study and learn from, as well.

“Bullet” is an all-around standout and someone that should continue to be held up as the gold standard for what it means to be a champion of this sport both inside and outside of the Octagon.

Women’s Bantamweight is Getting Mighty Interesting

Norma Dumont wrapped up the prelims on Saturday by delivering her best overall performance in the UFC — a three-round, unanimous decision win over former title challenger Irene Aldana in a fight where her superiority was never in question.

From the outset, Dumont was the quicker, more effective fighter, coming out of the blocks alert and attacking against the notoriously slow-starting Aldana and never allowing her to really work back into the contest. Though the worst of the cuts the Mexican veteran left with was caused by a clash of heads, Dumont certainly added to Aldana’s myriad bumps, bruises, and bleeding wounds, as well, outlanding her by 90 significant strikes over the course of 15 minutes while increasing her output and success rate round-after-round.

That’s now five straight wins for the 33-year-old Brazilian, who should replace Aldana in the Top 5 once the rankings update this week, and the victory comes at a perfect time, as the women’s bantamweight division is primed to be front and center next month at UFC 307 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Just under three weeks from now at Delta Center, not only will Raquel Pennington defend her title against returning former champ Julianna Pena, but top contenders Kelten Vieira and Kayla Harrison will also battle it out to determine who is next in line to challenge for the title. That leaves Dumont and the last woman to beat her inside the Octagon, Macy Chiasson, as the next two in the pecking order, with recent title challenger Mayra Bueno Silva not too far behind, either.

This feels like the kind of mix-and-match group where you could put any combination of these seven fighters together and get competitive, interesting fights, so it’s going to be fascinating to see how things shake out next month in SLC and then going forward as the next round of matchups take shape.

Quick Hitters

Diego Lopes remains one of the most fascinating stories in the sport after posting his fifth straight win by besting Brian Ortega on Saturday. He then hustled out to the Octagon to corner Grasso in her bout with Shevchenko, which just adds to the undeniably likability he possesses. In 18 months, he’s worked his way into the Top 5 and title contention in the featherweight division.

Esteban Ribovics is very clearly one of those fighters you have to tune in to see every time his name is on the call sheet because the Argentine is seemingly allergic to being in a boring fight. He and Daniel Zellhuber paired off in the Fight of the Night at Noche UFC, with Ribovics earning his third straight victory in a thrilling, back-and-forth battle that should carry him further up the divisional ranks next time out.

Ignacio Bahamondes made Manuel Torres pay dearly for lunging forward with long, looping shots, punishing him with counter right hands that sent him crashing to the canvas in a heap on two different occasions. “La Jaula” is starting to come into his own with consecutive first-round stoppage wins, trains alongside Muhammad, and is another of the “can’t-miss” talents to emerge from Dana White’s Contender Series in recent years.

Ketlen Souza is someone to keep very close tabs on in the strawweight division. The former Invicta FC champ made a statement with her “club and sub” finish of Yazmin Jauregui to pick up her second straight win and move to 7-1 over her last eight fights. Her lone loss came up a division in her promotional debut against rising flyweight contender Karine Silva, and now back at strawweight, her combination of power and finishing instincts makes her an interesting addition to the 115-pound weight class.

Joshua Van made the most of his short-notice opportunity opposite Edgar Chairez, getting himself back into the win column with a unanimous decision victory over the game Mexican veteran. Just 22 years old, Van is already 4-1 in the UFC and another talented, young prospect to track in the increasingly deep and competitive division.

Raul Rosas Jr. kept things moving in a positive direction with a unanimous decision win over Aoriqileng in the Noche UFC opener, extending his winning streak to three in the process. It was a solid learning curve win for the 19-year-old, who had to deal with some adversity in the middle stanza, and the kind of fight that should provide a great indication of the things “El Niño Problema” needs to keep working on as he looks to continue pushing forward in the bantamweight division.

One Last Thing

Megan Olivi is one of the unheralded stars of the UFC — a consummate pro who routinely crushes whatever she does during each and every broadcast she’s a part of, but her efforts at Noche UFC have to be spotlighted.

Not only did she ace her usual assortment of introductions and soliloquies, all of which she has committed to memory, but Olivi also mixed in at both the broadcast table and analyst’s desk, while also rocking multiple wardrobe changes.

And then she jumped on a plane and crushed sideline reporter duties for the Seattle Seahawks’ overtime win over the New England Patriots on Sunday.

Everybody already knows this, but sometimes you still just have to say it: Megan Olivi is an absolute rockstar and she smashed it this past weekend!

And with that, I’m out.

See you again after UFC 307.
