When and why did you start training for fighting? I first started martial arts with Kung Fu as a child. I started in BJJ competition in 2005 and that helped me a lot with anxiety issues I had back then.
What professional titles have you held? World Champion at Invicta FC
Any accomplishments in amateur combat sports? BJJ world champ at black belt, Pan-American, South American champion. Before that, I did judo and had some regional titles and I also did quite a bit of street racing, where I had a few regional titles, too.
Any belts/ranks in grappling disciplines? Black Belt in BJJ 2nd degree
Any belts/ranks in striking disciplines? White/green prajied in Muay Thai
What has been your toughest fight to date and why? Oh, I had several fights that were very tough for a variety of reasons, not necessarily due to the opposition, but because of moments. This one against Godinez, for example, was extremely hard on a personal level, coming off my second straight surgery meanwhile having a fantastic opponent on the other side of the cage.
Who is your favorite fighter and why? Demian Maia. His style, his jiu-jitsu adapted to MMA is amazing. He seems to be someone that is able to live jiu-jitsu in its purest form and I admire him a lot as a fighter. He is an amazing example as a person and athlete. The world needs more Demian Maias.
Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? Yes, I have a degree in physical education.
What was your job before you started fighting? I have worked on a bunch of things. I have been a PE teacher, receptionist, and phone operator.
Personal Life / Background: Since I wasn't able to live from fighting I did quite a few things to earn a living. As a teen I worked as a librarian, I was a teacher at a program for young adults, worked as a phone operator in the education branch of the government, all of these in parallel with fighting. I have a physical education degree so I have also taught PE for kids and teens, so I have done a little bit of everything.
As far as a hobby goes, I am a very curious person. I'm always reading, always researching things that have nothing to do with fighting and competition. I love learning about human behavior, history; I study a lot about psychology, still taking baby steps into that one, but I am learning a lot.
And in my free time I like to be with my family, friends and girlfriend, and I love playing chess and boardgames, in general.
