Biggest difference in training for this fight? My biggest difference in training would be the total amount of extra activities I did daily on top of my regular training. Ensuring I ran, jump ropes, did my pushups and sit ups, just like the boxers do
When and why did you start training for fighting? I grew up around MMA. My father fought under Erik Paulson. Growing up watching the UFC I always knew I was destined to be there one day. I fight to secure my future and have the skills to defend myself and my family
What does it mean for you to fight for the UFC? It means a great deal to be in the ufc. It is the goal I aspired to achieve from my early years in life, always knowing one day I’d be here. I have a son due in December and to be able to create a great life for my family means more than anything to me. To achieve that highest level of being a champion in this sport is very important to me.
What professional titles have you held? A1 Combat bantamweight title
Any accomplishments in amateur combat sports? 3 amateur belts
Any belts/ ranks in grappling disciplines? I am a brown belt under Erik Paulson
What has been your toughest fight to date and why? Hardest fight is my 5th fight, the only one that has gone the distance in my last 8 fights. The kid was very very tough and we both agreed to battle.
Who is your favorite fighter and why? My favorite fighter has to be ilia or petr. They way they box and the calmness of their striking is great
Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? Did 1 year in college
What was your job before you started fighting? I’m currently a safety professional for the construction industry. My father and I have our own safety business as well Occusafe Network. Before then I served at many different restaurants with my last being club 33 in Disneyland
Origin of nickname: The Professor Finesser came from a bit of a joke, a saying between friends when a big task was accomplished. But as I became sharper and my fighting become more of an art form it was a mantra for who I wanted to be in that cage, and what I wanted my performance and my skills to exemplify, Finesse.
Personal Life / Background (family stuff, kids, etc): I’m the oldest of 8 kids in my family. We grew up around martial arts as my dad used to fight and owned kids fitness centers as well. I was a highschool wrestler taking 8th in CA state and 5th at the national tournament in Virginia Beach. I grew up in Orange County all my life, and I’ve always loved to compete. I’ve always loved combat sports and what it means to be a true warrior. I strive to be a good example and a defender to my family and those I love, and that’s what being a warrior means to me.
What are your hobbies, activities or other interests when not training for a fight? I am an avid outdoorsman, I recently backpacked and submitted mount whitney. I love to spearfish, shoot guns, camp and hike, anything outdoors really. As I said earlier I am pursuing being a businessman as well in hopes to grow my company to as large as it can be. Right now I am preparing myself and my home for the arrival of my baby boy along with my wife
