When and why did you start training for fighting? I began training full-time in June of 2010. My twin brother started fighting before me and I followed suit.
Training: Strength & Conditioning in the morning. A pad session with one of my coaches. Fight team training.
What ranks and titles have you held? CFFC middleweight champion. Ranked as high as #2 in the world in the Glory Kickboxing middleweight division.
What fight do you consider to be the key fight in your career and why? I’ve had 52 professional fights between boxing, kickboxing and MMA. Every single one of them has forged me into the fighter I am today. However, there is one where I ultimately decided to win, and I really do think it was a breaking point in my career. It was my second stint back in the UFC and my second fight during that run (fourth UFC fight altogether). Maxim Grishin. He was big, missed weight as well, and a veteran. I felt I was doing well but then he got me down and pinned up against the cage. I had to make a decision. Right then and there I had a conversation with myself that I will never forget and ultimately made the decision to win. Joe Warren always used to tell me, “winning is a decision”. It never fully hit me until that moment. Of course, I got my hands raised in that fight!
Who is your favorite fighter and why? My original favorite fighters are from the old school. Guys like Brian Foster, Matt Hughes, Chuck Liddell, GSP, then it moved on to guys like Jon Jones, Justin Gaethje, Israel Adesanya. I can’t say I have one. I admire all the greats!
Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? I went to Culver-Stockton College in Canton, MO and Quincy University in Quincy, IL. I majored in Business Management.
What was your job before you started fighting? Fighting has been my job since I got out of college.
Specific accomplishments in amateur competition? I held four amateur titles and went 9-1.
Specific accomplishments in pro competition? CFFC middleweight champion. UFC, Bellator, WSOF, Titan FC vet. Four-time tournament style fighting champion. Glory Kickboxing middleweight title contender.
Is there a cause that you want to use your platform for? The biggest thing is to believe in yourself, ignore the noise and fiercely chase your dreams! There will always be naysayers, critics, and people telling you to do something else, but their reality does not have to be your reality. Believe in yourself, work hard and you can accomplish anything in this lifetime!
Beyond a championship or money, what motivates you? My wife, my family, my friends. They’re my biggest motivator. Of course my inner desire to be the best that I can be helps as well!
Favorite grappling technique: Triangle choke
Favorite Striking technique: Knees to the dome
