CERRONE vs MEDEIROS

Stepping into the Octagon with a three-fight losing streak, the longest of his career, perennial contender Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone put that skid to an end in a hurry Sunday night, halting Hawaii’s Yancy Medeiros in the first round of their UFC Fight Night main event at Austin’s Frank Erwin Center.

In the process, Cerrone moved into a three-way tie with Georges St-Pierre and Michael Bisping for most victories in UFC history with 20.

Not surprisingly, the pace was fast from the start with these two welterweight action heroes, and while Medeiros seemed to land the harder blows early on, as the round progressed, Cerrone’s counters were on target, even producing a flash knockdown of the Hawaiian, whose response to incoming fire was to try to answer right back. That turned out to be a mistake, as Cerrone – now bleeding from a cut on his forehead, surged in the closing seconds of the round, capping off a combination with a right hand to the head that stunned Medeiros. The rubbery-legged Medeiros stumbled to the mat, and after a series of follow-up blows, referee Herb Dean stepped in and stopped the bout at 4:58 of the first round.

With the win, the No. 11-ranked Cerrone moves to 33-10, 1 NC. The No. 15-ranked Medeiros falls to 15-5.
