Next in Line - Hendo’s Back
By
Thomas GerbasiLAS VEGAS, May 26 – There will be no vacations for new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton Jackson after his stunning victory over Chuck Liddell at UFC 71, as it was announced tonight at the MGM Grand that two-division PRIDE Champion Dan Henderson will return to the Octagon for the first time since 1998 to face Jackson in what promises to be one of the biggest mixed martial arts fights in years.
“Quinton’s my friend, Chuck’s my friend, we’re all friends,” said Henderson. “But it’s a sport and a business and I’d be happy to make some money with some friends.”
No date for the championship bout has been set.
A native of Temecula, California, the 36-year old Henderson (22-5) turned to mixed martial arts in 1997 after a stellar Greco-Roman wrestling career that saw him represent the United States in 1992 and 1996. Since then, he has matched his success in the sport of MMA, winning the PRIDE middleweight and welterweight championships, the only fighter in history to own both titles simultaneously.
Among the Team Quest standout’s victories are those over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Renato Sobral, Renzo Gracie, Murilo Bustamante, Murilo ‘Ninja’ Rua, Vitor Belfort, and most recently, Wanderlei Silva. In fact, it was his stunning third round knockout of Silva in February that added the PRIDE middleweight title to his welterweight crown and made him the obvious candidate for a MMA Superfight with Jackson later this year.
Henderson is no stranger to the UFC though, as he scored back to back victories over Carlos Newton and Allen Goes on the same night at UFC 17 in May 15, 1998.
And now, nine years later, he’s back.
“I’m happy for the fighters and the fans that we finally get to see who the top guy is,” said Henderson.
