Machida won the first two. Shogun won the last two. The 3rd round could have gone either way and the champ should be given close rounds, so I think it was a good decision. Shogun appeared to win the fight because he was getting stronger and more effective while Lyoto was fading and getting less effective. If the fight were to keep going, it seemed likely that Shogun would have eventually KO'd the tiring Lyoto. So, in actuality, Shogun was the better fighter that night. However, the right decision was made for a 5-round, 10-point judging system.
i think machida just barely won first three rounds by the smallest of margins and shogun clearly won last two but still wasnt dominate enough to get 10-8, in my opinion thats where all the controversy started but the way the point system UFC uses, i think the judges got it right. the fans at the show are crazy for booing because no matter what the decision that was one of the best fights i have ever seen and cant wait for the rematch
watched the fight a second time (this time sober), and still had the fight going to shogun. First time I saw it I only thought Machida had won the 3rd round. Watching it a second time, I see that Machida out pointed him in round two as well. First round Machida had a strong start with numerous knees that I don't think did much damage. Shogun finished that round strong with numerous leg and body kicks that landed hard. Think shogun took that round and still think he won the fight, but can see how it was closer on the scorecards than I first thought.
