Biography

TRAINING: I have been practicing a lot of grappling

When and why did you start training for fighting? My brother, Hiroki Kotani, is a fighter and he taught me MMA techniques. I started my career in 2000, when I was 17.

What ranks and titles have you held? Amateur champion in Rings, judo black belt.

Do you have any heroes? I like WWE pro wrestling, so my hero is Shawn Michaels. I like Ken Shamrock too.

What is your favorite technique? I like punching techniques. My kickboxing teacher is Riki Onodera, who has taught Rumina Sato and Ryo Chonan.

What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? UFC is the best fighting organization; it is my dream place. I have been fighting to get back to the UFC and now I have this second chance, so I aim to be the UFC champion.

Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? I like sweets and cakes, so I want to become a patissier (pastry chef). I studied in the patissier special school.

What was your job before you started fighting? Student.

• Has won 13 of his last 16

• 16-4-2 between UFC bouts
