Biography

Thoughts on opponent, Roy Nelson? Nelson’s one of those very tough guys. He’s fought everyone and he’s definitely a veteran of the sport; he’s one of the tougher guys in the UFC ever, in my opinion. He’s tough to finish, tough to beat, and he only loses to really good guys, so this is a good step up and a good chance for me to show that I belong up there with the rest of those top guys.

When and why did you start training for fighting? I started right after I was finished going to college. I wanted to compete at something outside of wrestling.

What ranks and titles have you held?
I've held No. 1 rankings in college wrestling multiple times in my career.

Do you have any heroes?
Hulk Hogan and my wife.

What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC?
It means everything to me. It means that a lot of hard work has paid off and I'm in the upper tier in the sport amongst the best fighters in the world.

Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn?
I went to school at Oklahoma State University and studied education.
What was your job before you started fighting? I went straight out of college wrestling into training to fight.

Specific accomplishments in amateur competition?
Four-time NCAA D-I qualifier, 2010 NCAA runner-up, three-time All-American, three-time Big 12 finalist, winningest heavyweight at Oklahoma State

Favorite grappling technique:
North-south choke and armbars

Favorite striking technique:
I’m really enjoying the art of kicks right now
