Biography
TRAINING: I train Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. My typical training day includes four sessions. For example, Monday morning I do strength & conditioning at 10 am, no-gi grappling at 11 am til 12:30. Monday night I wrestle from 5-6 pm, and then work boxing from 7:30 til 9 pm.
When and why did you start training for fighting? Was a freshman in college and looking for a new sport. My father and I used to rent the UFC tapes, so when I heard that there was a Muay Thai/BJJ school in town, I signed up and got hooked!
What ranks and titles have you held? I was the XFO light-heavyweight champion prior to my first UFC run.
Do you have any heroes? Dan Gable
What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? The UFC is the highest level of MMA, so it is the true test of your abilities. The UFC fighters are all professional level athletes that train at the best gyms, have the best coaches and teammates, and are 100% dedicated. It is an honor to be battling these athletes at this level.
Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? Bachelor Degree with a Biology major and Chemistry minor. Magna cum laude honors and biology graduate of the year.
What was your job before you started fighting? I worked in a laboratory doing blood testing.
Specific accomplishments in amateur competition? I won the Midwest Amateur Shootfighting Championship in 1998.
Ranks in any martial arts styles: I am a BJJ black belt under Pedro Sauer.
Favorite grappling technique: Arm triangle choke
Favorite Striking technique: Clinch knees
